Common questions

Why "related reading" and not the same article?

Readette never opens, copies or unlocks the article you paste, and it never removes a paywall. It searches public sources for free pieces on the same subject: posts people shared on Hacker News, newsletter posts, repositories with the article's code or notes. Sometimes one of them is by the same writer; often it is a different take on the same topic. That is the promise: related reading.

Why does a link ask me for a title?

Readette reads the title from the words in the link's address, on your device, and does not open the link. Some links carry no title (a short link, or an address made only of numbers). Type the title, or a few words about the subject, and search as usual.

What does "Likely the author's site" mean?

For a Medium link that names an author, Readette checks whether GitHub has a public profile with the same name as the author's handle and whether that profile lists a website. If so, the site is listed first and marked Likely the author's site. "Likely" because the match is by name only: Readette cannot be sure the profile belongs to the same person, and it does not check that the site holds the same piece. This needs GitHub switched on in Settings.

Why does a source say it is busy or could not be reached?

GitHub limits how many searches an unsigned-in visitor may make in a short time, and Readette does not use an account. When the limit is reached, the Sources card says GitHub is busy; wait a minute or two and search again. A source can also be unreachable when your network is offline or blocks it. The other sources still answer.

Why is the list short, or empty?

The Sources card tells you which sources answered and which found nothing. Try a few key words instead of the whole title. For a Medium link, Readette can also check whether medium.com is reachable from your network so it can explain a short list; you can switch that check off in Settings.

How do I use the Share extension on iPhone or iPad?

In Safari or any app, tap Share, then choose Readette in the row of apps (tap More if you do not see it, and add it to your favourites). The results appear in the share sheet, and Share list sends the free reads on. If a link has no title in it, the extension asks you to type one.

How do I use Readette on the Mac?

Click the small book in the menu bar, paste a link or type a title, and press Return. Copy list copies the free reads as a short text list. An optional global keyboard shortcut, off by default, opens the panel from any app (Settings).

Does Readette remove paywalls?

No. A page meant for paid subscribers stays for paid subscribers. Paid posts are marked and sorted below the free ones.

Please tell us the link or title you tried, the sources that were switched on and what you expected. A screenshot helps.
